New World Beat

I dreamed of making this show many years ago, while transitioning my focus of work from music to film. For over a decade, I shared the stage with some of Canada’s finest musical artists, many of whom had no support from labels or management. After any given show, I’d often think that each of those artists deserved their own documentary. Those thoughts evolved into the desire of constructing a cinematic tapestry, focusing on multiple artists who represented the Toronto music scene.

New World Beat is an exploration and a celebration of the Toronto music scene. It shines a light on a multitude of artists making vastly different kinds of music, informed by their diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and points of view. The common thread weaved throughout this tapestry is the candid perspective of a city that each of these artists love, which may or may not love them back...

My directorial aim was two-fold. Firstly, to blur the line between an immersive live performance and carefully-constructed cinema. Secondly, to curate interactions that authentically portray musicians engaging in discourse and activity - in other words, 'the hang'.

Blood, sweat, and tears were poured into this project, and I couldn’t have done it without my brilliant series producer, brother in arms, and friend, Matt Greyson. We also became first-time dads, one day apart, DURING production. Many thanks to MDC Media for trusting me to make this show from start to finish. To Katie Lafferty at Makers, for getting this show in front of people’s eyes and ears. To TVO for the enthusiastic acquisition and proud presentation. To my many collaborators on this project - thank you for your tireless efforts and brilliant work. And of course, to all the artists featured in New World Beat - thank you for trusting me with your stories and your art. It was so great jamming with you.

I’m thrilled, proud, and honoured.
